Underwater Photography: Useful Tips and Examples

Underwater photography is probably one of the most challenging area of photography since it require other specialized skills other than photography such as diving, snorkling or swimming. To take excellent underwater photos, you must be sufficiently skilled as a diver or swimmer so you can safely takephotographs. Color and contrasts inphotos also become problematic as you go deeper or farther away from your subject. This is because the longer wavelengths of sunlight (such as red or orange) are absorbed quickly by the surrounding water, making everything underwater looks blue-green in color.

These problems can be solved using two basic techniques: First, make sure to get asclose as you can with the subject. This is best achieved using wide angle and macro lenses which allow the photographer to get closer to the subject. However, one has to be careful also since getting close to the subject would likely scare away fishes and other sea creatures. The second technique involves the use of flash to restore any color lost vertically through the water column. If used effectively, the fill flash will “paint” in any missing colors by providing full-spectrum visible light to the overall exposure.

Below are more useful tips on how to capture underwater photography like a pro from uwphotographyguide (dot)com. These are just some of the techniques and tips found in this website. For more detailed tips, head on to uwphotographyguide.

  1. Get close to your subject – preferably within 12 inches. Water reduces color, contrast, and sharpness
  2. Make sure your camera flash is turned on, preferable in “forced flash mode”
  3. For best composition – get low, shoot at an upwards angle, don’t center the subject, try to fill your frame with the subject. Down shoot “down” at the subject
  4. Make sure the subject’s eyes are in focus
  5. Set your camera to the highest resolution, and the lowest ISO to begin with
  6. Use auto white-balance when using a flash/strobe, and custom white balance or underwater mode when not using a flash
  7. Learn how to use manual mode or aperture priority mode if your camera offers it, so you control the balance between the natural light and the light from your flash
